When Life Gets in the Way

You haven’t heard from me for a while. And I have had a few people ask me if I’m still writing. It’s not that I have purposefully stopped writing. Truth is, life has gotten me down. I’m exhausted, overwhelmed, and weary; and I just haven’t been able to put words on paper. Nothing is really wrong necessarily, I am just feeling weighed down.

I know I’m not the only one. All of us experience difficulties in life from time to time, and I am certainly no stranger to the heaviness that life can bring. But God knew that we would experience these pressures of life, and He gave us instructions in His word on how to handle it.

  1. Spend time with Him.

Matthew 11:28-30 says, “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me-watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

I realize that this has been my problem. If I'm honest, I have not found the real rest my body needs by keeping company with Him. Sure, I have devotions every day. But just reading some Bible verses and saying a quick prayer, or going to church once a week, isn’t keeping company with Him. In order to find the real rest this scripture is talking about, we need to commune with Him. We need to spend quality time in His presence daily.

I once heard someone say that they went to church to get their “fill-up” for the week. Getting a fill-up should never take the place of your daily time with Him because without that personal time with Him, there is no relationship.

2. Don’t give up!

Galatians 6:9 (MSG) says, “So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time, we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit.”

Keep seeking, and in His time, you will see change.

If you have been weary like me, and life has seemed to get in the way; take some time as soon as you can, just to sit in His presence. When you do, you may experience an overwhelming peace as He gives you the real rest that you need.

Lord, you know that life sometimes gets me down. I pray that when I feel the heaviness, I will stop and take time to soak in your presence. Help me to experience the peace and true rest that only You can give. Thank you for always being ready to meet me right where I am. Amen
