Letting Go

And Turning Worry Into Prayer

Well, I did it. It was one of those moments I have dreaded since my daughter was born; I took her to college. I took my oldest child to college several years ago, but there is something different about the moment your last baby bird leaves the nest…. It’s empty.

Before leaving the day we moved her in, her roommate's parents and I joined my husband as he prayed over the two girls. As I hugged her and walked out the door, God reminded me that prayer and leaving everything in His hands were all I could do. As much as I wish I did, I do not have any control over what happens in the weeks, months, and the four years to come. She is in His hands.

I am facing worry over my 18-year-old daughter being away from home, and the new season I am encountering as an “empty nester.” Maybe you are facing a different situation that you need to put in His hands. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a job, a health issue, a struggling marriage, a strained relationship, or any other challenge life may bring. God is asking you to trust Him to take care of it.

Letting go certainly isn’t easy, but it is a necessary part of our faith journey. Philippians 4:7-8 reminds us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

I’ll be the first one to say that this is easier said than done. But I have also learned that the longer it takes me to give God whatever I am worried about, the more stressed and worried I become. I consider all of the possibilities, the worst-case scenarios, and the what-ifs. Can you relate?

But God is asking you today to turn your worry into prayer. Anytime you start to think about all of those worse-case scenarios and what-ifs, pray. God will give you peace in the midst of your circumstances, and He will provide for every one of your needs.

Lord, thank you that you care about all of our worries, no matter how big or small they are. Thank you that we can cast all of our cares upon you, and you will give us peace. Help us to trust you more, and to turn our worries into prayer. Amen
