Something's Missing

Updated: Oct 3, 2021

“No Scars in Heaven”

I love this song by Casting Crowns. It doesn't matter how many times I hear it, I cry every single time. If you haven’t heard it yet, you need to find it. I can’t remember when a new song on the radio hit me as hard as this one did.

When I hear it, I think of my grandma. I can remember the last good day I spent with her in the nursing home. I remember laughing with her, sharing a cup of coffee with her, and reminiscing with her. Just like the song says, “I would have stayed a little longer and hung on a little tighter, what I’d give for one more day with you.”

There is something missing when a loved one passes on. Although it gets easier, that missing piece in our hearts never goes away.

But my favorite part of this song is the reminder that “the only scars in Heaven” will be on the one that holds us. In Heaven, there will be no more pain, no more scars, no more sorrow. Jesus endured pain and He willingly took our sins so that we can spend eternity with Him. But this song also says “I’ll fight this fight, this race I’ll run.” We can’t give up, even when it’s hard. The Bible doesn’t say that this life will be easy.

Romans 8:18 says, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”

There are times when life will be hard, but it can’t compare to the joy that is waiting for us if we finish this race on Earth well as we are reminded in 1 corinthians 9:24-27 (NIV) “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.”

Whether you have a missing piece in your heart from losing a loved one, a spouse or a friend walking away, or from some other situation in your life; remember that this will all be worth it when we see Jesus face to face.

And remember that you are already being held in the hand of God. Isaiah 41:10 (NLT) says “don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” And you can trust that He will never let you go.

Journal Prompt: What part of my heart is missing, and what do I need to cast on the one who holds me in the palm of His hand?

Prayer: Lord, thank you for always holding us. Thank you that we can cast our worries, our sadness, and all of our cares on you. Thank you that you are ready, willing, and able to mend those missing pieces of our hearts. Help me to finish this race well so that I can see that Heavenly glory that you have prepared for me. Amen
