Beauty and Significance

The quilt in the picture is a quilt my daughter made when she was in middle school. This is the only quilt she has made, but it is beautiful. She had guidance from my mom, who is a wonderful quilter. But the sewing gene skipped a generation in our family. I could never create something like this, especially for a first attempt.

Although I usually don’t care for quilts in my style of decorating; I do appreciate the skill, time, and craftsmanship that goes into making them.

Quilting requires skill to create a beautiful finished product full of intricate designs. Each piece must be cut, pieced together, and quilted with the end result in mind.

I especially love the history of quilting. Often, a quilt represented resourcefulness. Blankets were needed, but there was little money to buy cloth, worn-out clothes were often used to make them.

Many times, a quilt is made out of a certain person’s old dresses, hankies, or baby clothes. In more recent years, quilts have even been made out of t-shirts.

I love the significance that a quilt can tell a story. Whether it’s the story of a person’s life, or the story behind the pattern of the quilt; the story makes it that much more special.

Just like a quilt, each one of us has a story to tell. What’s your story? Not what others think your story should be, but the story that God wants to tell through you.

When I read Psalms 139:13-14 (NIV) I am reminded of the artistic ability a quilter must have. It says, 13 For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works, and I know this very well.

Every piece of a quilt is significant and pieced together perfectly. This is what God does with your life as well. He has a plan and a purpose for each piece. He had the pattern for your life before you were even born.

Are you living the story God planned for you? The quilt of your life is beautiful. Even what we see as flaws or mistakes are part of the beauty of the design.

God loves you and took his time knitting you together. He is a beautiful artist and created you special, significant, and beautiful. If life is getting you down, remember that you are wonderfully made. God doesn’t make mistakes, everything you struggle with, everything you go through, can all be used to bring glory to Him.

Lord, thank you for piecing me together so intricately. I pray that I will see the beauty and the purpose you have placed within me. Help me to use the situations in my life to bring you glory. I praise you for the wonderful artistry of all of your creations. Amen
