All little girls love to twirl, especially if they are wearing a flowy skirt that catches the air as they spin. But I learned in ballet class how important it is to find a focal point. I remember doing pirouettes in ballet class. Without finding a spot to focus on I would get dizzy, lose my balance, and fall down.
This has been a life lesson for me as well. There have been so many times that I have lost my balance. When I get out of balance things seem to fall apart. The key is to keep Christ as my focal point.
Hebrews 12:2 (AMP) says, “[looking away from all that will distract us and] focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of faith [the first incentive for our belief and the One who brings our faith to maturity], who for the joy [of accomplishing the goal] set before Him endured the cross, [a]disregarding the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God [revealing His deity, His authority, and the completion of His work].”
When I did all of those pirouettes in class, it was easy to get distracted by the room that seemed to be spinning around me. I had to find that ONE spot and find it every time I turned. My focus could not change.
Recently, I have been allowing all of the distractions of life to get the best of me. I have struggled to keep Christ as my focus, and therefore, many areas of my life are out of balance. In my writing I have often stated that we should not strive for balance, not perfection. Being out of balance has made me feel overwhelmed, stressed, anxious, and even defeated.
In order to keep my focus, I am going to once again make prayer and devotions my first priority every day. I do spend time in prayer and devotions daily, but I have let other things keep me making sure that they are at the top of my list. This is easy to do, and I’m sure most of us have struggled with this from time to time.
But I am determined to restore balance into all areas of my life by following the words of Proverbs 4:25-27 (MSG) “Keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all sideshow distractions. Watch your step, and the road will stretch out smooth before you. Look neither right nor left; leave evil in the dust.”
Looking ahead, with Christ as my focus, will allow me to bring that balance that I am in desperate need of right now.
Lord, help me as I focus on you. Help me bring the areas of my life back into balance as I look ahead and not allow other things to distract me. Forgive me for allowing distractions to creep in, but I am determined to seek you and make sure that my time with you is a top priority. Amen
